Born in 1953 in Karlovy Vary, he studied librarianship and information science at the Faculty of Arts at the Charles University and screenwriting and dramaturgy at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). In the 1970s, he was the junior champion of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in single sculling. Since 1983, he has worked as a freelancer. He is a songwriter (in 1973–1985 co-worked with Jan Burian), lyricist, poet, novelist, author of children's books, translator from French, screenwriter, columnist. He has served as the long-term chairman of the Czech Center of the International PEN Club. He presented his life and work in a book interview with Jan Šulc: Jiří Dědeček – A Moving Target (2020).
